It is pathetically easy to critique early concepts without more detailed information, but I'm fascinated to hear how it's possible to connect the dots between the creation of a benign community as you describe, and the energy (eg financial etc) which will power this flourishing? Surely the one massive barrier to any form of heart focused endeavor is the need for it to be sustainable in the long-term? And for me that's that's really been the stake in the heart of most benevolent visions. Dominion tends to flow to those with the energy? At at which point potency is forced to take a backseat?
Thanks Nigel for kicking off the comments : ) You have (and I would expect no less from you!) put your finger precisely on the point. You are using the word energy for the same thing that I am calling power. Wherever it accumulates, that thing wins.
So by saying potency lacks energy (power) you are essentially saying there is no such thing, or at least it’s no match for dominion. It’s a widely held position. I will try to show otherwise.
Along the same lines, benign is the last word I would use to describe these communities. The easiest way to understand potency is to look to nature, which is sometimes benign, but often far from it. Nature shows that this is not incompatible with beauty, balance, harmony. On the contrary it is necessary.
This is one of the central (and challenging) themes of Blake’s illustrations of the Book of Job, which we will be looking at in depth.
